What are Sealed Units?
Sealed units are advanced glazing systems designed for superior energy efficiency and comfort. They consist of two or more panes of glass, separated by a spacer and sealed to create an airtight chamber. This chamber is often filled with an inert gas like argon or krypton to enhance insulation.
Key Features and Benefits:
Sealed units significantly reduce heat transfer, keeping homes warmer in winter and cooler in summer. This can lead to substantial savings on energy bills, reducing energy consumption for heating and cooling by up to 20-30%.
The multiple layers of glass and the gas-filled space dampen sound, creating a quieter indoor environment. Double-glazed units can reduce noise levels by approximately 20-30 decibels.
Sealed units maintain a warmer interior glass surface, reducing the likelihood of condensation and preventing potential mold growth and damage.
Upgrading to sealed units can enhance your home's curb appeal and increase its overall value.
Some sealed units come with Low-E coatings, which help to reduce the amount of UV light entering the home, preventing furniture and flooring from fading.
With proper maintenance, sealed units can last for over 20 years.

Types of Sealed Units

Laminated Glass
Laminated glass consists of two glass layers bonded to a tough plastic interlayer. It enhances safety, protects valuables, and reduces noise from traffic, tools, and other outdoor sources.

Tempered Glass
Tempered glass is heat-treated for extra strength and safety. If broken, it shatters into small, harmless pieces.
When is the time to replace a sealed unit?
Replacing only the sealed unit instead of the entire window frame can be a cost-effective solution if the frames are in good condition. Signs that a sealed unit needs replacement include:
- Foggy or cloudy glass
- Temperature fluctuations
- Condensation between the panes
- Cracks or chips in the glass
- Drafty windows
